Ryan wins my Groom Of The Year award for 2013.
It was an absolutely beautiful day in Maleny when I headed up to photograph Nyssa and Ryan’s wedding at The Spotted Chook. Nyssa and Ryan had chosen to get married at The Spotted Chook because it’s where they started going when they first got together, and it’s where Ryan proposed to Nyssa, so they have a very special connection to the place. I was so excited about this wedding – I knew it was going to be so gorgeous. What could possibly go wrong?
Well, one major thing could. Like the groom getting sick the night before the wedding. So sick that he could barely stand and barely keep any food down, if at all. The happiest day of his life, and he wasn’t sure if he was even going to be able to stand at the altar.
I felt so, so sorry for Ryan. In talking about the wedding leading up to the day we had decided to have the bridal shoot before the ceremony – which I think worked out perfectly, because it meant that we could take some photos with minimal fuss and work around how Ryan was feeling. And you know what? He was an ABSOLUTE TROOPER. He smiled for every photograph, obliged me whatever my little request, and never once complained. All he wanted to do was make the day as perfect as he could for his new bride.
So Ryan wins my Groom Of The Year Award, 2013. What a total champion.
He made it through the day, by the way. He stood for the ceremony, he spent time with his family and friends, he was present for the reception (even if he couldn’t eat the amazing menu that The Spotted Chook and prepared for the day) and even gave his speech with humor and charm. He also danced with Nyssa for their first dance.
I found out in the week after the wedding that Ryan had to be hospitalised for an inner-ear infection. It pushed Nyssa and Ryan’s honeymoon back by a few days, but Nyssa told me that everyone involved in their honeymoon plans – from flights to accommodation – were completely accommodating and helped them out to the best of their ability. How amazing is that??
Also – total shout out to The Spotted Chook, who were ridiculously fantastic for Nyssa and Ryan on their wedding day. They told Nyssa and Ryan that, the next time they come to stay, they will recreate their wedding menu for them so that Ryan can enjoy it properly. They also extended their stay by a few days for Ryan to rest and organised for him to get to the local hospital. If you’re thinking of taking a break in Maleny for a holiday, you MUST stay at The Spotted Chook! You will not find better service anywhere.
So, without further ado, here is – Nyssa and Ryan, Married!
The story doesn’t end here! Nyssa and Ryan’s wedding was an intimate affair with 30 guests, and Nyssa told me that after their honeymoon they were throwing a post-wedding party for all their family and friends who couldn’t be with them on their actual wedding day. She asked if I would be able to come and photograph that party, too, so that Ryan could have as many ‘good’ memories as possible. Of course I said yes! When I arrived, they were both dressed in their wedding get-up and we decided to walk through the forest out the back of Ryan’s mum’s property to take some more photographs – this time with Ryan feeling MUCH better! Here are some snaps from that day (including a little friend who came out to say hello!)
Nyssa and Ryan are the coolest. I’m so happy that I’ve got to share in this little snippet of their life and do my absolute best to create some beautiful memories for them (even if they weren’t feeling the 100%!). It’s people like this that make my job one of the best jobs ever.
